Innovative Childcare and Remote Extended Support (ICARES)

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, North Carolina’s State Board of Education (SBE) approved the Innovative Childcare and Remote Extended Support (ICARES) grant in order to  provide supervised instructional childcare for Pre-K‐8 students without at‐home supervision when schools were closed.

Through the ICARES grant, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) awarded a total of $4.4 million to 13 grantees to establish Public School Unit (PSU) partnerships with community organizations to provide three pillars of support to students and families during the pandemic:

  • Instructional child care,
  • Academic tutoring, and
  • Digital connectivity.
